Up and Down

A boy, a penguin and a cinema screen full of possibilities.

My role: Projection Design

Up and Down production photograph

A penguin wants to fly. His best friend, a boy, wants to help. Ga Ga Theatre brought Oliver Jeffers' picture book into cinemas, placing two live performers in front of the big screen for a story about friendship and the pull of an adventure.

The projection brought the book's painted world into motion: rooftops, balloons, a red aeroplane and a night sky. On the small stage below, brick-painted boxes became seats, hiding places and an aeroplane of their own. Animated characters handed the action over to the actors, connecting the screen to the performance. The production toured Picturehouse cinemas in London in autumn 2013, with further performances in 2014.
