I work as a visual artist, designer and filmmaker with client work fluctuating between shooting, editing & camera work for film, TV and projection design for theatre. My personal work on the other hand floats between public art, video art and more recently virtual reality, NFTs and the digital world.

I have created films mainly in, but not limited to, the arts sector. Making films about Rana Begum, Karla Black, Sir Anthony Caro, Anish Kapoor and Roger Hiorns for clients such as BBC, Channel 4 and the Arts Council Collection. Most recently I had the opportunity to work on the incredibly poignant film, A Day in the Life of Coronavirus Britain by Candour TV for Channel 4 which you can still watch over on 4oD now.

Alongside this I also design projections for stage shows. Most notably the European stage premiere of the critically acclaimed West End production of The Kite Runner. The show has seen two successful West End runs and three national tours including a run at Dubai Opera House.

Other video design and projection work has appeared in shows such as; Living Lakes in New York and Michigan; Rocky Das Musical (Stuttgart, Stage Entertainment); Derren Brown - Miracle (National tour); Theatre of Illumination (Light Night Leeds), Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (West Yorkshire Playhouse), Richard III and Charlie Peace (Nottingham Playhouse); the award winning adaptation of Of Mice and Men by Mike Kenny (Mind the Gap); Clockwork (National Theatre); Mapping the City (Slunglow); The Mamba (West Yorkshire Playhouse) and Piano Circus – Trilogies (Kings Place).

One of my favourite projection projects has been Theatre of Illumination, which was commissioned by Leeds Inspired for Light Night Leeds and seen by an audience of over 30,000 people during the course of it’s one night performance. Theatre of Illumination appeared in a 12 page feature for Bright 2, a globally distributed publication about architectural illumination and light installations published by Frame Publishing.

I have an endless curiousty to play and experiment. Trying new things and often failing over and over at the many things that interest me. Current explorations include augmented, virtual and mixed reality artwork, the technologies that enable them and their impact on people, creative economies and the natural world.

I am also learning the piano again after a 28 year break and am based in the North of England.

If you would like my shooting CV and bio drop me an email on studio@willsimpson.co and I’ll send it through. I’m also on Instagram and   Twitter.
